Our Story

Why Nexterus can fulfill your needs!

Nexterus was founded in Baltimore, Maryland under its original name of TBB (Transportation Bureau of Baltimore) by A. Allan Polakoff, a Brooklyn-born attorney and former industrial traffic manager. Originally known as Transportation Bureau of Baltimore and later TBB Global Logistics, the company has always specialized in bringing the best ideas, products and services that large companies employ to meet the needs of small and mid-sized companies. Nexterus views itself as the champion of the SME. In that role, the company researches best practices of the world’s most efficient supply chains and brings those solutions to the SME marketplace in scalable and affordable applications.

Back in 1967, before the word “outsource” existed, Nexterus created a subscriber service to act as the traffic (logistics) department for small and mid-size enterprises. Without this service, clients were left to manage domestic freight transportation with an internal resource who was forced to perform these complex, heavily regulated tasks as an add-on to their primary responsibilities in transportation, warehousing, operations, or procurement.

In the late 1980’s, the company developed what is believed to be the first Transportation Management System (TMS). In the late 90’s and early 2000’s, the company grew through several acquisitions and expanded its name to TBB Global Logistics. In 2016, the company fully rebranded to Nexterus to represent its diverse service portfolio mix of supply chain and logistics management/consulting services.

In the ensuing years, the company has been a leader in its market, creating a broad set of supply chain management services and tools. These include, but are not limited to, modeling and optimization of global networks (factories, distribution centers, warehouses), inventory (raw material, WIP, finished goods) and transportation (all modes) in addition to complete management of third-party warehousing and domestic and international transportation management.

Today, Nexterus is a premiere logistics management firm using a mix of custom developed code and licensed software products to give clients exciting online tools and analysis making the management of a diverse, global supply chain as easy as possible. Nexterus has an average client tenure of 15 years while our longest standing client has been served for 45 years. Nexterus has always employed high-level talent and works continuously to grow our internal resources.  The company has an average employee tenure of 15 years.  Many of our longest serving employee tenures top 25 years. To this day, Nexterus is the oldest, privately held company of its kind in America, and remains 100% owned & operated by the Polakoff family.
